Get Out of Overwhelm, Make More Money: An Anti-hustle Guide

Oct 22, 2024

If you are an entrepreneur who wants to stay out of overwhelm, but still build a profitable business that gives you the time, the money, and the energy to do all of the things that you want to do in your life, then I have one important tip for you, stop hustling.

Embrace the wheel of life

I hate the term work-life balance because I think of those Libra scales when I think of work-life balance, and that is a lot of pressure to put on both sides of the scale. Work has to balance out with everything else that’s important to you and everything else that’s important to you has to fit in one side of the scale.

I prefer to think of the wheel of life, which has separate wedges for work/business,  family, your relationships, your hobbies, your health, your spirituality, your work, your community service.

Just shifting away from the idea of work-life balance to a more holistic flow between different components of your life changes your approach and allows you to hustle less.

3 ways to step out of hustle and into profitability

You don’t need more time. You need more focus. You can do less better. These affirmations have made a big difference for me in stepping out of hustle, but how do you actually do that in your business?

Let’s look at 3 business focused easy to step out of hustle and into profitability.

Set Boundaries

So often we’re worried about setting boundaries. We want to be accessible to our clients. We don’t want to put people off with limitations.

Boundaries actually do the opposite. They keep you and your clients safe and set clear expectations. When you set boundaries and keep to them, you meet expectations — and don’t burn yourself out.

A simple boundary you can set is work hours. Decide when you workday starts and when it stops. That can look however you want, and you can change it, but setting work hours sets an expectation for your clients — and for you as to when you should be working and when you should be tending to other parts of your wheel of life.

Pro tip: Use a closing ritual at the end of your work day. It could be as simple as blowing out a candle you lit at the start of your day, writing your top 3 priorities for the next day on a Post-it, or closing all your tabs and turning off notifications.

[To Do]  Set work hours.

[To Do]  Create an end of day ritual.

Don’t Multitask

We’ve all heard that multitasking doesn’t work — but most of us keep trying to do it.

Multitasking not only takes more time, it also pulls us away from what we should be doing. When I had young kids, I felt like I was never in the right place at the right time. I was trying to help my kids when I meant to be working. I was trying to work while also being present for my kids.

Another way we multitask is leaving notifications on all the time. We’re trying to write a sales page and responding to a text. We’re working on our program and seeing what’s happening in Slack. Turn off notifications for specific periods of focus and get things done!

[To Do]  Schedule time for family, friends, hobbies, and work.

[To Do]  Set do not disturb times to focus on one thing.

Raise Your Prices

When I find someone who’s hustling too hard, it’s usually because they’re having to work too hard to hit their revenue goals.

If you need to see 10 clients to bring in the right amount of money, then you have to do 10 times the client maintenance, 10 times the hourly work. By raising your price so that you only need to see eight clients to make the same amount, you cut down the total workload and the total brainpower that goes into that, and you’re actually able to serve your clients better.

In fact, I recently had a client who, by raising her prices by $10, was actually able to make enough to quit a part-time job that she had to make ends meet. One study by the Harvard Business Review suggests people won’t notice up to an 8% increase. What would happen if you raised your rate by 8%?

[To Do]  Do some math to what a small increase would mean to your revenue.

[To Do]  Raise your rates. If you publish rates on your website, start by simply changing them there or quoting the new rate the next time you talk to a prospective customer.

Your days of hustling are over. These practices are designed to help you have a more balanced, less burnout prone business.

Doing it yourself is more hustle culture talking.
